Renting a Car

Recommended platform: Booking.com, Ctrip携程, 租租车

There are many rental agencies. We recommend international agencies such as Sixt, Avis, hertz, or Europcar.

Car Rental Info for Late June

  • Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO): Economy cars from ~€50/day. Major providers: Avis, Europcar, Hertz, Sixt.

  • Florence Peretola Airport (FLR): Economy cars from ~€55/day. The same providers are available. Outside the exit of Florence Airport, a shuttle runs every 10 minutes, taking you to the vehicle rental building, which is a short distance away. We do not recommend walking there with luggage, as the route is unsafe.

Car Rental Tips for Italy

  • Book in Advance: Reserve your rental car 30–40 days ahead to secure the best rates.

  • Check Policies: Review fuel policies (typically full-to-full) and insurance options before booking.

  • Age Requirements: Drivers must be at least 19 years old, though some vehicles require a minimum age of 25.

  • Beware of Upselling: Rental companies often try to sell last-minute add-ons—be cautious, especially if you already have personal insurance.

  • Inspect the Car: Before driving off, take photos/videos of the vehicle’s exterior and interior, and report any damage. Keep all documentation until your deposit is refunded.

  • Toll Roads: Italian highways require toll payments—ask your rental company which lanes to use.

For International Drivers:

License & Documentation

  • EU/EEA License: Valid for driving in Italy without additional permits.

  • Non-EU License: Requires an International Driving Permit (IDP) and the original license.

  • Minimum Age: Generally 18 to drive, but 21-25 for rentals (varies by company).

  • Passport & Visa: Required for identification along with a valid license.

  • Credit Card: Needed for car rental deposits (debit cards are often unaccepted).
